August 23rd is Vulcanalia – the Roman holiday honoring the god of fire and volcanoes! It also marks the first anniversary of the launch of the picture book “I Built my House on a Volcano,” written by local author Joe Cole, & illustrated by Stacye Leanza, whose first & greatest love is illustrating for children. Filled with cultural imagery of late nineteenth-century Central America, I Built my House on a Volcano’s intricate attention to detail gives viewers a glimpse into the environment and lives of the Mayans who lived there. This is the first time ever that the original artwork behind the conception of the book will be shown in public! Viewing these illustrations in person shows the immense level of research and dedication to authenticity, as well as the creativity and craft of Stacye Leanza’s work. Third Friday reception on July 17 from 5–7pm.
It’s hard to leave home sometimes—trust us, we know. But it is important to not only stay active in your community, but to also express curiosity about new subjects. This event is the perfect chance to spread your roots and learn new things!
